Here's another off-topic thing I wrote here. But, it also concerns Alice Burdeu, so it is still relevant:

It seems as if every reality-competition show pushes out “winners” that amount to…well, nothing, really. But what about the reality show losers? Usually, it seems as if the losers end up being more successful than the winners. Of course, this is not a breakthrough and has been common knowledge for a long time now, but let’s take a look at the winners & losers of reality television competition programs:

Flavor of Love:

Season one winners, Nicole “Hoopz” Alexander scored herself a spot on a few rather trashy magazines, and a role on the spin-off show “I Love Money.” Sure, magazines and photoshoots can be lucrative, but enough to sustain a career? Unless she wins “I Love Money,” then the answers is no. Season two winner Chandra Davis (Deelishis) became a “model” after the show, and currently has her own line of jeans. She’s made some cameos in music videos and magazines and has dated Busta Rhymes. Supposedly, she’s working on a “music career.” Let’s see where that goes. And the third season winner? Well, she hardly even won, but let’s just say she’s been pushed to the side-lines.
But what could a two-time loser amount to? Well, let’s just ask:
New York/Tiffani Pollard has made a name for herself just by being herself. Her previous shows “I Love New York 1 & 2” were among the most watched shows on VH1. The premiere was also VH1’s most watched episode ever (at that point). Her new series, “New York Goes to Hollywood” debuted with an impressive 1.7 million viewers (which is huge for a network such as VH1). I guess it’s true; New York is the HBIC of VH1.

America’s Next Top Model

Sure, the show is like crack, but can it actually make a reputable model? Well…no. At least not the winners. Adrianne Curry, cycle 1 winners, is now part of the “celebreality” world. But we all know the only “celebreality” person that matters to VH1 is New York. Cycle 2 winner Yoanna House hosts The N’s “Queen Bees,” which is doing fairly well in ratings despite her cardboard cut-out hosting. Cycle 3’s Eva Pigford has been doing well for herself, but is nowhere near being a household name. Cycle 4 gave us a quitter, and cycle 5 gave us someone that went searching for chap stick. Cycle 6 proved to be better; the winner, Danielle Evans, was the first to have her CoverGirl contract renewed and has been doing various catalogue work. But is that “high fashion?” Cycle 7’s Caridee English has been showing up at parties, and Cycle 8’s Jasleen has been right there, too. However, it can be said that Jasleen has made a lucrative business of herself: she gets paid to attend parties and is invited to “red carpet” premieres. But do tons of test-shots and hardly any other work make you a model? Cycle 9…well let’s not talk about that. Cycle 10 just ended, and all we have seen of winner Whitney Thompson are a few facebook photos and some more test shots. But what about:

Elyse Sewell from cycle 1. She has done incredibly well for coming in third-place. In fact, she’s probably done the most out of anyone from the first few cycles. She is fairly well-known in the Asian modeling market and has modeled for high-end companies such as Christian Dior, Vidal Sassoon, Jean Paul Gaultier and tons more.

Mollie Sue Gondi is the cycle six equivalent on Elyse Sewell. Both are doing incredibly well for people coming from a show that has produced…nothing, really.

Janice Dickinson. Sure she wasn’t a contestant, but after she “left”/was kicked out, she went on to her own show, The Janice Dickinson Modeling Agency, which was a hit for the Oxygen network. Janice was always “popular,” but after appearing as a judge on Top Model, her popularity skyrocketed among the younger people that didn’t know/care about her before.

And let’s not forget Toccara Jones who recently landed a multiple-page spread in Italian Vogue, the highlight of any contestant from any Top Model franchise.

There are over 32 “Top Model” shows, ranging from Ghana to Kazakhstan, but have any of them produced world-wide (or even nation-wide) known models? Another loser, from Britain’s Next Top Model Abigail Clancy has done a good job of making a name for herself…but not by modeling.

American Idol

You all know the winners and losers of American Idol by now. What has season two winner Ruben Studderd been doing? Not much compared to loser Clay Aiken. Season three gave us the over-exposed Jennifer Hudson and the winner, Fantasia Barrino has been designated to Lifetime movies and crazy performances. Carrie Underwood is considered a successful winner in the US and other English-speaking countries…but she has not made much of an impact on foreign markets (especially not in the way Kelly Clarkson has). For this, I will not call her a “winner.”
By now, everyone knows Chris Daughtry as the guy on the radio that isn’t Nickelback but sounds like Nickelback. You also probably know him because your mother loves his music. Despite all of that, he is considered a success…as is Elliott Yamin, who, oddly enough, has performed well on the world charts.
David Cook is doing a good job with copying Daughtry (not just in style, but in the charts), but he isn’t the lone winner from that season. Runner-up David Archuleta is also making an impact with his single “Crush.”

Survivor

This show has given us a lot of annoying people, but very few are still popular. Season one winner Richard Hatch was popular for about 5 minutes, as were the rest of the cast. But what about:
Elisabeth Hasslebeck. Long before she became the daytime poster-girl for the republican party, she was a loser from Survivor.
Colby Donaldson made an acting career after losing the second season. Perhaps no one care about him anymore (other than my mother), but he did make a name for himself shortly afterwards.
J.P. Calderon lost Survivor, but came back into “popular culture” after Janice Dickinson picked him and after he came out.
Rob & Amber became the super-couple that no one wanted to care about. For some reason, CBS insisted that we should care about them, so they were cast on The Amazing Race not once, but twice. But where are they now? No one knows. Nor do they care.

The Amazing Race

This show didn’t really give us anyone, except:
Reichen Lehmkuhl only became popular after appearing on “The Amazing Race,” and only because popular due to his looks. The height of his popularity came during his relationship with Lance Bass. But does anyone care about him now? Not really.

Dancing With the Stars

This show has brought about the resurgence of many careers. The two-time winning dancer, Julianne Hough is now focusing on a music career. But will anyone care? It’s up to time to tell.
Mario Lopez experiences a resurgence of the dimple-craze after losing to Emmitt Smith. Now he can be seen (shirtless) everywhere you turn.
Heather Mills became more popular than ever in the US. She continued the popularity with her famous divorce battle. Would anyone care if she hadn’t been on DWtS? Probably, but this just added more fuel to the fire.

The Hills

No, the Hills is not a competition show, nor is it (probably) a reality show, but the supporting cast has become even more popular than that “part Latina” firecracker, Lauren Conrad.
Heidi & Spencer seem to be all that anyone cares about these days. Be it from their crazy wedding rumors to their crazy music videos to Spencer’s creepy beard, it’s undeniable that America loves to hate (and just plain hates) this couple. They’re everywhere these days, and they don’t seem to be going away anytime soon.

Project Runway

Project Runway seems to be the only legit show. Both the winners and losers have made names for themselves in the fashion world. The most recent winner, Christian Siriano was full of catch-phrases that caught on like fire. Now, he’s selling his clothing and himself. But the true winner of Project Runway isn’t even a contestant, it’s none other than
Tim Gunn. Everyone loves Tim Gunn. He’s almost as famous as Heidi Klum now, and he doesn’t show signs of stopping anytime soon (stopping his brand of the Tim Gunn lifestyle, that is. Who know if he’ll continue Project Runway or not).

The Apprentice

The Apprentice gave us an obnoxious catch phrase and Carolyn Kepcher. Later, it gaves us Ivanaka’s boobs. The winners…who knows what they’re doing now, but what about the number one loser of reality television:
Omarosa. What hasn’t she been up to? She refuses to let us forget her, and, I can’t help it, but I have to respect a girl that works her way to the top (even though the top, in this case, if the trashiest bottom you can get). She’s crazy and she’s a bitch, but we love watching her.

Making The Band

Diddy, Puff Daddy, whatever he goes by, “knows music,” and the music business…but then explain to me why I hear the name “Da Band,” and think “what the hell is that?” Or how about O-Town? And Day26? Donnie Klang, anyone? Danity Kane seems to be the only winner here.

However, there are always exceptions for these rules, and these winners that won are truly winners:

Ksenia Kahnovich from the Russian Top Model show is (along with Alice Burdeu) the reigning champs from the Top Model franchise. Ksenia has worked for Versace, Louis Vitton, Christian Dior, Dolce and Gabbana, and the list goes on.

Alice Burdeu from Australia’s Next Top Model has constantly been named a “rising star” in the fashion world despite her attachment to the reality show. Having modeled for Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Louis Vuitton, Dolce and Gabbana, Proenza Schouler and tons more, it’s safe to say that Alice may, one day, become a house-hold name in fashion-forward houses.

Danity Kane. Perhaps they are not well-marketed, but their single “Damaged,” became one of the songs of the year so far. Their albums have done consistently well, and they’re well known to people that haven’t watched Making The Band.

Kelly Clarkson from American Idol season one. We all know who she is by now. Her only American Idol competition is Carrie Underwood. But Carrie is not world-wide known yet. So, Kelly, you get the upper-hand in this battle.

Leona Lewis from “The X Factor.” I applaud her music producers and the people working towards making her a star, because they have done an amazing job. With only one hit song in the US (as of now), she’s already a house-hold name. And performing at the Olympics? Well that’s just great for her. But time will tell; perhaps she may only be a two-hit wonder in the US. People are already trashing her and comparing her to Mariah. That is one comparison that is difficult, if not impossible, to live up to.

Dr. Will Kirby from the US version of Big Brother has made a successful career on reality tv as part of E!’s Dr. 90210.

Kathy Griffin…well, she’s not technically a “realty star,” but she did win The Celebrity Mole, and after that, her popularity seemed to increase radically. After that, her hit show “My Life on the D-List” has won Kathy and Emmy Award, and has won Bravo some strong ratings.

Trista and Ryan. It’s undeniable that, at one point, America was apparently crazy about this couple (even though I never came across one person that actually cared about them). Their wedding special was huge in the ratings, and their popularity seemed to be higher than ever…until Dancing With the Stars, when Trista learned that apparently America had forgotten her and voted her out first.

The God Warrior from Trading Spouses. Who could forget her Gargoyles tirade? The now infamous “gargoyles! It’s dark-sided!” lines will be in popular culture for a while and don’t show signs of stopping. Marguerite Perrin did a good job of continuing her 15 minutes after the show ended, but now no one really cares about her. But later, her repeat appearance on Trading Spouses (the second time) attracted moderate viewers. It seemed, even after the death of her daughter, that no one cares about this God Warrior anymore. But still, her 15 minutes were good enough to grant her a spot on the winning winners list.

Girls Aloud. I’m hesitant to put them on this “winners” list. They are winners in their own right, and have become popular…in the UK and bordering areas. But does anyone really know of them elsewhere? Perhaps, but they aren’t making any impression on foreign charts.

Classy Actresses Are Easier to Come By Than HuffPo Contributor Seems to Think

Setting aside the redundant video that uncannily resembles stock news footage shot sometime during the Nixon Adminstration, there's plenty to not get about HuffPo contributor John Farr's recent overview of "smart, classy" actresses' decline in Hollywood. It's not like we can even necessarily argue with his taste for Joan Allen, to whom he ascribes the sense of sophistication, glamour and taste evident in icons like Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly, Vivian Leigh and Greta Garbo:

Personally I still miss this unmistakable quality, and have to ask, where has it gone? We have no shortage of talent and beauty in Hollywood today, but those stars that come across (to men at least) as having true class, style, and by extension, smarts, seem in low supply. I don't see that rare, ethereal quality in Angelina, Charlize Theron, Naomi Watts, or Halle Berry, capable "actors" all. (Admittedly, Laura Linney comes close, but she has a certain earthbound quality; notwithstanding her obvious acting chops, too often she comes off like everyone's sister, the one you instinctively passed over.)

We wouldn't take it that far, but still, this idea that one contemporary actress is the last classy woman standing got us thinking: Pound for pound, what's Joan Allen got that a handful of others after the jump don't?

Patricia Clarkson: She earned an Oscar nod playing up ailing dysfunction in Pieces of April, but she's a revelation of raw, complex class in underseen indies from The Dying Gaul to Lars and the Real Girl to Married Life. Woody Allen should be sued for her character's forced, egregious wimpiness in Vicky Cristina Barcelona.

Penélope Cruz: Mostly in Spanish-language films, we're afraid, particularly Volver and All About my Mother. But her strides opposite Ben Kingsley in Elegy help us forget her crossover beard efforts in Sahara and Vanilla Sky.

Vera Farmiga: She owned Down to the Bone, overshot hysterically in Joshua, and settled into a tormented, riveting (and generally unseen) sexiness in Quid Pro Quo. Bonus: She belongs here if only for holding her own in The Departed in what's written as little more than a token role for "Anonymous Person with Vagina."

Naomi Watts: Did class and trash with equal aplomb in Mulholland Drive, then slyly revised the role as rags-to-riches starlet Ann Darrow — the only watchable thing opposite Andy Serkis and a green screen in King Kong. Was as classy as they come in little-seen, forgotten The Painted Veil. (Rent it, John Farr.)

Catherine Zeta-Jones: Versatile and gorgeous, too often overshadowed by her male leads in the likes of the Zorro films, Intolerable Cruelty, No Reservations — not to mention in her own marriage. She's reportedly playing Lana Turner in Stompanato, finally giving her a chance at the lead in a melodrama people might actually see. (Sorry, Harvey Weinstein.)

Kidman's baby a "distraction" on set

Nicole Kidman's baby daughter has been distracting the cast and crew of the actress's new movie.

Kidman, who gave birth to Sunday Rose with husband Keith Urban last month, has been taking the new arrival onto the set of new film Australia.

However, director Baz Luhrmann has reportedly "put his foot down" after she and co-star Hugh Jackman spent too much time focusing on the baby rather than their work.

A source said: "There has been a lot of cooing over the baby. Sunday Rose is so cute and she's become something of a mascot for the rest of the cast and crew.

"Baz has actually had to put his foot down because he's got less than six weeks to finish the movie and all the baby fuss is starting to be somewhat distracting."

THIS season fashion bible Vogue magazine has declared that the latest must-have look is a sexy sprinkling of freckles.

"Freckles were once something stars tried to disguise, but they've finally made it to the forefront of fashion," the fashion bible says.

Famous frecklies Lindsay Lohan, Cynthia Nixon, Julianne Moore, supermodel Lily Cole and Australia's Next Top Model winner Alice Burdeu are some of the stars embracing their natural beauty and letting their freckles shine through.

Freckled faces also get a big thumbs-up from the fellas.

"Freckles should be . . . embraced, touched, kissed," said Alex Bilmes, fashion editor of mens fashion mag GQ.

"Freckles are a provocation: if I can see that some of you is freckled, I cant help wondering about the rest.

There are two main types of freckles simple freckles and freckles caused by sunburn.

Simple freckles, which tend to be inherited, are usually small, tan and round and are caused by a heavy deposit of melanin at one spot in the skin.

Some experts caution that the freckle fad might cause people to overlook the warning signs of skin damage.

While many freckled celebrities are undoubtedly beautiful, we need to be cautious in promoting this as a trend, said dermatology expert Jane Lewis.

Gemma Ward to retire?

From popsugar:

Australian model Gemma Ward has been branching out recently taking acting roles in major films. She has already starred in both The Strangers and Black Balloon.

Pedestrian magazine is today claiming that Gemma Ward is close to officially retiring from modeling. They say that she is retiring to pursue her Hollywood acting career.

I think that Gemma is a great model and looks amazing in editorials for fashion magazines. Here she is pictured on the catwalk at Valentino where she looks gorgeous.

The retirement has not officially been announced yet but it's been rumoured for a while. We wish her luck in Hollywood!

Rachel Griffiths' chance at another Emmy

RACHEL GRIFFITHS

Show: "Brothers & Sisters"

Emmy pedigree: Three noms

Best scene: A major global investment venture for Ojai Foods goes south, and Griffiths' Sarah is forced to take responsibility for the financial fallout.

Why she might win: Griffiths has garnered tons of respect across both film and TV formats as a veritable chameleon; among the Aussie native's talents is an uncanny ability to mimic an American accent spot-on. If voters wish to honor an actress who, perhaps, shows the most versatility and breadth in her work, then Griffiths is a prime choice.

Maybe not: With her work and nominations for "Six Feet Under," one might make the case she's been overexposed.

London in love with Nick Cave's son Jethro Lazenby

THE son of an Aussie rock god is on his way to achieving perfect poster boy status on the UK modelling scene - purely because of his famous genes.

While Jethro Lazenby's street cool credentials are an obvious selling point, it's his other genes - as the son of Australian musician Nick Cave - which are helping the teen to achieve perfect poster boy status in the lucrative UK modelling scene.

In a time when kids of rock stars are the new breed of celebrity overseas, Lazenby has joined the likes of Ronnie Wood's son Jesse and Keith Richards's daughters Theodora and Alexandra in making an edgy stamp on the international fashion world.

Dubbed the "rockocracy" by the UK press, the new-generation groovers were celebrated in a recent multi-million-pound campaign by designer label Burberry.

After attracting considerable interest from British fashion titles and agencies, lanky fashion plate Lazenby has decided to capitalise on the interest by relocating to London.

The move is so far paying off - having signed with London agency Independent Models, Lazenby has already shot his first fashion spread for a British magazine.

The 18-year-old has also been booked to strut his stovepipes in several catwalk shows during London Fashion Week in September.

Lazenby, who until recently was living with his mother Beau in Melbourne's Collingwood, has inherited his father's lithe frame and taste for the spotlight.

"I've never wanted to live in his shadow but if I can make money, why not?" he said.

Actors donate to Ledger's daughter

Law, Farrell and Depp donate money

MATILDA Ledger's claim to her father's fortune is yet to be decided, but the three actors who have completed the late star's final film role have helped guarantee the youngster's financial security.

Johnny Depp, Jude Law and Colin Farrell have shown their respect for the Australian actor who died too young and donated their sizeable earnings from the film, The Imaginarium of Dr Parnassus, to Heath Ledger's three-year-old daughter, it has been revealed.

While footage of Ledger will be used in the film, Depp, Law and Farrell also play versions of his character Tim in Terry Gilliam's fantasy epic - made possible because the story crosses from London to parallel worlds.

"The three actors were totally heroic coming in," Gilliam said.

"This doesn't happen very often ... where there's a tragedy like this, and very famous, very successful actors suddenly say, 'OK, we'll do whatever it takes to help.'

"They came, they allowed the movie to be finished and they didn't take money -- it goes to Heath's daughter.

"That's extraordinary and wonderful ... and we've got a movie full of wonderful people who did extraordinary things to help."

Matilda's claim to Ledger's entire estate - likely to be worth up to $20 million - is to be decided in an Australian court, it was reported last month.

Hugh Jackman happy to take Russell Crowe's snubbed role in 'Australia'

Hugh Jackman has revealed that he was second choice for the role in epic movie 'Australia' - after Russell Crowe turned down the part.

Jackman claims the producers were keen to land Crowe for the part of Nicole Kidman's lover, but the actor snubbed the film over pay.

However, Jackman doesn't mind being second choice.

"I don't mind if I'm off the bench second or third reserve," the Daily Express quoted him, as saying.

" I just didn't want to miss out on being a part of the film, he added.

Nicole Kidman Inspires Gold Medal

Nicole Kidman inspires sailing gold medals

A PHONE call of support from Hollywood star Nicole Kidman was one of the inspirations behind Australia's golden day of sailing.

In the space of an hour, 470-class duo Elise Rechichi and Tessa Parkinson joined 470 men's winners Malcolm Page and Nathan Wilmot in setting alight scenes of green and gold jubilation on the Qingdao foreshore.

It was unbridled emotion for the two crews who have trained together for the past two years.

With the words of Kidman ringing in his head before he hit the water yesterday, Page told how he first rejected "the unknown number" on his mobile phone before returning the Aussie actor's call ahead of the important preliminary rounds.

Kidman felt compelled to contact both Page and Wilmot.

They had named their gold medal-winning boat Australia - a salute to Kidman's soon-to-be released film.

The two name all their boats after her films, with previous skiffs named Bangkok Hilton, Dead Calm and Days of Thunder.

Page had earlier joked about getting the call.

"I was getting breakfast and thought, 'Ah, I just don't want to talk to her today', so I bumped it, then two seconds later there was a message from Nicole wishing us good luck."

Yesterday he confirmed he did finally talk to the star.

"Yes, I ended up returning her call. She was very happy," an embarrassed Page said.

Asked if Kidman's show of support had played a role in their victory, he replied: "It does go a long way, don't worry about that.

"She was very surprised that we do have a tradition of naming our boats after her movies and she's just really stoked to be part of a team."

Page and Wilmot were never going to surrender their gold.

The three-time world champions and now Olympic gold medallists only had to start in the medal race to confirm their victory after they had built an unassailable lead 48 hours earlier.

But instead of taking a safety-first approach, Wilmot and Page cemented their overall win with another commanding race victory.

"We didn't have to do what we did today but we were nice and relaxed, and it ended up all right," Page said.

"I think I got about nine hours' sleep, my best sleep of the week."

The result also provides redemption for the pair after they finished 12th as medal favourites in Athens in 2004.

"That was a driving force behind us," Page said.

Rechichi and Parkinson entered yesterday's medal race in a similar position to the men.

Only a last place would have cost them glory.

They finished sixth to cement the gold.

"We're still shell-shocked, actually," Parkinson said.

"When the first boat went through the line and the gun went off, we just looked at each other and thought we've just got to get through that line.

"We knew we had it but to actually come through the line with gold made the past four years worth it."

Rechichi may be small, but she has a big heart.

She lost 10kg from a serious illness picked up from the water at Qingdao during an international regatta in 2006, and was told she would never make it back.

"There's certainly been some challenges over the past few years," she said. "I was really sick, and there was no light at the end of the tunnel.

"I had some special bug that they couldn't find what it was but once I knew I was getting better.

"I hadn't put in the last four years to give up on the last 18 months."
